A few years ago the alkaline diet was all the rage among Hollywood celebrities and therefore among us plebs as well. It seems to be rearing its head again; diets tend to be like clothes, going in and out of fashion in cycles. But does the alkaline diet have any real science behind it and does it work?

The state of your body being resistant to the effects of insulin is referred to as the condition of insulin resistance. Hyperinsulinemia, or high levels of insulin on the blood, is the result of insulin resistance as your body produced more and more of the hormone to compensate. Hyperinsulinemia increases the risk of many chronic diseases as well as weight gain, particularly in the abdominal region.

Have you ever suffered from “eating amnesia”? That is when you are aware you have eaten something but you just can’t remember the details; what did your food smell like, what did it taste like and did you actually enjoy it? If this happens on a regular basis, you are likely to be a distracted eater. The chances are then that you will eat again in a short while, and probably overshoot the calorie mark for the day. Not such a big deal now and then, but if this is happening daily this could lead to weight gain and ill health.

Most people know that the complications of diabetes include worsening vision, nerve damage and kidney disease but now we can probably add brain atrophy to that list. Atrophy means the wasting away or decrease in size of a tissue, in this case the brain. This ultimately will mean the development of a neurological conditions such as Alzheimer’s or dementia. Yet another reason for diabetics or those at risk of diabetes to manage their blood sugars levels!

Eating disorders, especially among school girls, are on the rise. Girls at an all-girls school may be more at risk than those at co-ed schools. High school aged girls are at most risk, although disordered behaviour and self-image issues are starting to be seen in primary-age school children. The earlier an eating disorder is addressed and treatment set in motion, the higher the chance of full recovery.
